Instead of the lazy days of summer, Calgary has been experiencing the hazy days of summer due to the B.C. wildfires.
The smoke has definitely made it tough for anyone with a breathing condition and that was who Coun. Brian Pincott was thinking of when he suggested a temporary fire ban on outdoor fire pits.

As the mom of an asthmatic, I understand his intent. However, I can’t support a ban. First of all how many fire pits are in Calgary? How much of an impact are they having on our overall air quality? We’ve had several weeks of smoke and anyone who struggles with poor air quality is already dealing with it.
I raised this with my listeners this week and quickly learned that a temporary ban isn’t the issue, fire pits in general are. Calgarians either love or hate fire pits. Complaints ranged from garbage being burned, smoke seeping into neighbours’ homes while windows are open during hot summer nights, to unattended fires. Proponents love spending time with friends and family, and having a taste of camping, without leaving the city.
In the end, the city poured water on Pincott’s idea of a temporary ban. But, he did reignite the debate on banning fire pits altogether.
