Network Rail, the U.K.’s railway manager, has taken a novel approach to persuade passengers with luggage to take the elevators: it’s published a montage of hapless folks tumbling down escalators at a station in Leeds.
At Leeds station alone, the company reports there were 28 accidents in the past year involving passengers struggling with their luggage, an increase of 25 per cent from the previous year.
“Time and time again, we see passengers taking multiple items of luggage on the escalators rather than using the lifts which are provided. The lifts are there to keep you safe and stop you having an accident, as seen in the CCTV,” said Vinny Burke, Leeds station manager.
The security camera footage shows several hard tumbles as passengers, including those appearing to be seniors, struggle to co-ordinate themselves with their luggage on the moving steps.
“Some of the falls are incredibly nasty and all of them are completely preventable,” said Burke. “We hate to see members of the public injured and we have had cases where people have had to cancel their journeys due to the injuries they have received.”

Leeds is the third-busiest railway station in the U.K. outside of London, according to Network Rail, and is a major hub that connects to the Manchester Airport and London. Nearly 30 million passengers go through the station in a year.
