In a Wednesday news release, the Calgary Zoo said two Humboldt penguin chicks hatched on May 22 and one Gentoo chick hatched a week later on May 31.

“This has been a busy season in our penguin colonies,” Dr. Malu Celli said. “We are working hard to increase the diversity in each population.”

“These are extremely encouraging results and we hope to have many more positive years of breeding success.”

All three of the penguin chicks are thriving and being cared for by their parents.

The zoo said a third Humboldt chick hatched on June 13 but did not survive.

They are, however, keeping a close eye on an egg laid by a King penguin which, if fertile, is expected to hatch in August.
