Police watchdog investigating death of man in Thunder Bay, Ont., cell

TORONTO – Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating the death of a 50-year-old man held at a police station in Thunder Bay, Ont., on Wednesday.

The Special Investigations Unit says police, along with paramedics, were called to an address on Fort William Road just before 8 p.m. about an individual.

In a news release Thursday, the SIU says after being medically cleared by paramedics, the man was taken to a police station where he was placed in a cell.

The agency says that shortly after midnight, the man was found not breathing. Paramedics rushed him to hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Anyone with information or video evidence about the incident is being asked to contact the SIU.

The SIU is an arms-length civilian agency that investigates allegations of serious injury, death, or sexual assault involving Ontario police forces.
