RCMP have arrested and charged a 22-year-old man in connection with a hit and run at a Sherwood Park gas bar that seriously injured an employee.

Dalton William Gray, 22, has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, failing to remain at the scene, and theft under $5,000.

The incident happened on Saturday, April 22 and was caught on surveillance video.

Witnesses reported a man trying to leave the Superstore Gas Bar on Baseline Road without paying for his gas just before 3 p.m.

“A male employee attempted to intervene and stop the suspect from leaving, resulting in the employee being run over,” RCMP said on April 23.

The suspect vehicle drove away heading west on Baseline. Police released footage of the incident in the hopes the public could help identify the vehicle and suspect.

Customers and co-workers described the attendant as “just a great guy, super nice always friendly.”

RCMP said Thursday the man sustained significant injuries, particularly to his pelvic area and had already had surgery. RCMP said it’s expected he’ll require more surgeries.

Gray was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in court on July 19.
