West Kelowna wildfire serves as reminder of ‘extreme’ danger

The flames were within 75 metres from Mission Hill Winery. Contributed

West Kelowna fire crews threw everything they had at a wildfire Monday night.

More than a dozen fire fighters from various stations responded to a wildfire in the Mount. Boucherie area near Elk Road.

The fire had grown to approximately 200×200 metres before it was brought under control.

Officials say the flames were within 75 metres of reaching Mission Hill Winery.

The cause of the fire has been determined as a smoldering burning barrel. No mention of who left the barrel unattended.

The fire danger in West Kelowna is currently ranked as extreme.

“This is the highest rating. Campfire bans are normally considered following a period of at least 3 days at this level. The weather is expected to remain hot in the coming days and in the face of our Extreme Fire Danger, we are urging the public to be cautious in the Wildland/Urban interface. Remain vigilant and report signs of smoke or fire immediately to 9-1-1,” West Kelowna Fire Chief, Jason Brolund said.
