WINNIPEG — A new study from the Canadian Cancer Society is projecting a dramatic increase in the number of new cancer cases in Manitoba over the next 20 years.
According to the study, new cancer cases will increase by 50 to 60 per cent in Manitoba, far higher than the national average of 35 per cent.
“This is a sobering report that demonstrates how cancer touches every family in Canada and Manitoba,’’ Erin Crawford with the Canadian Cancer Society said.
A new report also suggests nearly one in two Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.

In 2017, the report projects 2,900 Manitobans will die of cancer, that’s an average of eight deaths per day.
On the positive side, statistics show the percentage of people surviving cancer continue to improve. Right now, 810,045 Canadians are living beyond a cancer diagnosis, nearly 2.5 per cent of the population.
