Death of 16-year-old girl from unknown drug prompts urgent warning from New West police

WATCH: An urgent warning from police to anyone thinking of taking a street drug. A 16-year-old girl in New Westminster took a lethal mystery drug and has now died. Another is in hospital. Nadia Stewart reports – May 27, 2017

New Westminster Police are warning about a lethal unknown drug following the death of a teenage girl on Friday.

Police told Global News a 16-year-old girl died after taking a drug she thought was MDMA. Her friend is in critical condition. Toxicology tests are pending.

They had purchased the drug in pill form from the same street-level drug dealer.

“This raises a number of different concerns for us, the first being that there’s a lethal drug circulating… and we don’t know what that drug is,” Sgt. Jeff Scott of New Westminster Police said. “Buyers are being told that it’s one thing when clearly it’s a mixture of other things.”

Police are telling drug users who don’t feel well to seek medical attention immediately.
