In 2013: NDP Leader Adrian Dix won re-election over BC Liberal Gurjit Dhillon (56 per cent – 35 per cent), but after the NDP’s defeat in the election, Dix resigned the leadership.
In 2009: NDP leader Adrian Dix won this riding for the second straight time, defeating Liberal Bill Yuen by nearly 3000 votes, 55-39 per cent.
History & Geography: Created before the 1991 election from the old Vancouver East riding, Vancouver-Kingsway roughly comprises the Renfrew-Collingwood neighbourhood. Aside from the 2001 election, the area has voted for the NDP candidate in every election since 1956.
Candidates
BC Liberals’ Trang Nguyen is a refugee from Vietnam. Her family was sponsored to come to Canada in 1980. Nguyen is a former reporter with Channel M and Fairchild TV, and from 2015 to 2016 was a federal citizenship judge. She now runs a small business. In the 2011 federal election, Nguyen was the Conservative candidate in Vancouver-Kingsway, losing to New Democrat Don Davies.
NDP’s Adrian Dix was first elected in 2005, and won the NDP’s leadership race in 2011. Prior to that, he was Chief of Staff to Premier Glen Clark from 1996 to 1999. In between, he was a political commentator, writing for the Times Colonist in Victoria and The Source in the Lower Mainland. Fluent in English and French, Dix graduated from UBC.
Green Party’s Ellisa Calder is an IT Consultant. Calder previously worked on the VANOC organizing committee.
Charles Bae is running for BC Conservative Party. The BC Conservatives are a mere shadow of the party from the 2013 campaign, when they fielded 56 candidates. In 2017, they only have five. It’s a small-government, right-of-centre party.
Brette Mullins is running for Your Political Party of BC (YPP). The YPP is running nine candidates in 2017. Their “open platform” includes a Reddit-based online discussion, and a focus on “open government” and sustainability.
