Garfield might hate Mondays in his hometown of Muncie, Indiana. But if he were in Montreal this week, he’d likely change his mind.

Montrealers and visitors were treated to a high of 23 C on Monday, a far cry from the average 9 C.

Downtown Montreal, hoards of people were out for walks, bike rides and most definitely, ice cream.

Montrealers were shedding the layers as temperatures rose steadily and the sun was shining down on the city.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“I mean the sun is out, the thighs are out,” said Athanas Ivanoff who was wearing shorts.

“I came overdressed. I’m glad I didn’t wear my thermal underwear I would’ve definitely been hot,” John Pipes said.

The record for this time of the year was set in 1945 with a high of 26 C.

But don’t expect things to last, rain and cooler weather are on the way. Tuesday’s high is expected to reach 11 C. Temperatures are expected to hover in the low- to mid-teens for the rest of the week.

“By the end of the week, probably at around Friday and Saturday, we should get some other good days, although not as warm as this one,” Simon Legault from Environment Canada said.

“Probably spring is going to be a little warmer than usual, but really not a record-breaking spring,” Legault added.
