Pictures of the Foreign Minister hunched over the injured officer, blood smeared on his face, circulated on social media as news of the incident spread. According to The Telegraph, Ellwood stayed at the side of the injured officer until an air ambulance landed in Parliament Square. He was later seen speaking to officers, with blood stains on his clothing.
According to BBC, the police officer died as a result of the attack.
Witnesses told the Associated Press they heard a loud bang and saw a car crash into pedestrians before the assailant attacked the police officer.
“A guy came past my right shoulder with a big knife and just started plunging it into the policeman,” said the witness.
One woman was reportedly killed and several others injured in what authorities have called a terrorist incident. According to Reuters news agency, loud bangs “similar to gunfire” were heard outside of the Parliament building around 2:40 p.m. local time.
A vehicle also struck a number of people walking on the Westminster Bridge, not too far from where the police officer was stabbed.

“We know there are a number of causalities including police officers but at this stage we cannot confirm numbers or the nature of these injuries,” Scotland Yard Commander BJ Harrington said. “Our response will be ongoing for some time as it is important that we gather all the possible evidence.”

NHS later said in a statement that at least 10 people were injured on the bridge.
This isn’t the first terror incident to touch Ellwood, a former solider himself. According to BBC, his brother was killed in the 2012 Bali bombings.
Ellwood was appointed as Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in July 2014, and currently serves as the Minister for the Middle East and Africa. His responsibilities include counter-terrorism and counteracting violent extremism efforts.
