ABOVE: Carol Todd, Amanda Todd’s mother, reacts to the news that a Dutch man has been convicted and sentenced for fraud and blackmail via the Internet. Aydin Coban is also accused of cyberbullying Amanda Todd – Mar 16, 2017

Carol Todd told Global News she is feeling many different emotions after hearing the news this morning. “I’m relieved, I’m satisfied, and I’m so happy that the courts over there decided on these verdicts and gave him 10 years and 243 days.”

Aydin Coban was convicted and sentenced to prison for fraud and blackmail via the Internet.

Coban was accused of cyberbullying dozens of young women and men. The Dutch court gave Coban the maximum possible sentence, calling his behaviour “astonishing”.

He could still be extradited to face charges in B.C. in relation to the Todd case.

“I think it’s a positive towards Amanda’s case when it comes to trial,” said Carol Todd. “Knowing Aydin Coban victimized these girls in a very similar way to what he did to Amanda and so it only gives more credence and more evidence and more plausibility that he could be the perpetrator in doing what he did to my daughter.”

In B.C., Coban is facing charges of making and distributing child pornography, extortion and harassment.

“Amanda’s [case] is a whole different new trial and I’ve heard that we will hear about the extradition ruling hopefully in April, April 4th is the date that I saw,” said Carol Todd. “And the supreme court in the Netherlands will rule whether he will be extradited to Canada.”

Carol Todd said she is hoping it will be a new process in the Canadian courts and she hopes justice will prevail in Amanda’s case as well.
