Young moose evicted from Saskatoon park

SASKATOON – The province’s moose population gets a little too comfortable with a moose calling James Girgulis Park home since last Sunday.

Yesterday morning, conservation officers tranquillized and safely relocated the moose out of city limits.

Conservation officers said this is the first time they’ve dealt with a moose within city limits in winter.

No incidents were reported that warranted immediate relocation of the animal.

This past summer, two moose were tranquillized and relocated from the same Saskatoon park.

Over, 3000 moose hunting licenses were issued last year, an increase of 36 per cent over the previous year in an attempt to decrease numbers.

The Ministry of Environment says numbers have decreased in some areas but the Saskatoon and Regina wildlife zones are still a problem because they are archery, shotgun and muzzleloader only.

They also say it will take a couple more years until numbers in this area level off and then drop.
