QUEBEC CITY, Que. – The Centre hospitalier de l’Université Laval in Quebec City welcomed the province’s first baby of 2013 only 10 seconds past midnight.
Young Mathilde was born to parents Mélissa Pilote and Emmanuel Gravel of Baie St-Paul by natural birth.
The mother and baby are doing well, the hospital said in a statement, and are planning a meet-and-greet with the capital press on Wednesday.

Mathilde is the couple’s second child. “The reason we brought the mother to Quebec City is because this was considered a risky birth,” said Richard Fournier, spokesperson for the Centre hospitalier universitaire de Québec, of which the CHUL is a member.
Pilote’s first birth, he noted, was done by C-section.
In Montreal, the first baby of the year was born at the Royal Victoria Hospital at 12:02 a.m.
The parents of the boy, weighting in at 7 lbs. 6 oz., have not decided on a name, and declined to release their own names.
Shortly after, at 12:14 a.m., St. Mary’s Hospital Center welcomed Ève-Catherine Dubé, born to Montrealers Geneviève Lajoie and Jean-Alexandre Dubé.
The baby and parents are doing well, the hospital said.
