Distress Centre reports troubling rise in suicides

CALGARY- There has been a troubling rise in the frequency and risk when it comes to suicides in Alberta.

The Distress Centre in Calgary has reported a significant increase in the number of emergency interventions. Over the last few years, the number of people considered to be a high suicide risk that take their own life has doubled to at least two every single day.

Volunteer Kelsey Kashleuba lost a close friend to suicide, and while she couldn’t save him she’s determined to help others.

“It’s what I feel I can do to help, and hopefully stop others from going through that and the pain of losing someone that way,” she says.

Staff want to stress that anyone feeling vulnerable and depressed should call a crisis line.

“This is a hugely disturbing trend,” says Calgary police chief Rick Hanson. “We’re seeing a dramatic increase, they cover all ages. Young teenagers and people, the most recent was in their 80’s and everything in between.”

He adds the impact suicide has on survivors is troubling.

“What’s so tragic is the impact on family. If this individual got through this they’d realize [their problem] wasn’t that big a thing.”

If you or someone you know needs help, call the Distress Centre at 403-266-HELP.
