Regina police officer charged with assault causing bodily harm during arrest

REGINA – A Regina police officer has been charged with assault causing bodily harm stemming from an arrest made on May 7.

A complainant alleges that Const. Robert Power, 40, assaulted him during the course of an arrest.

The accusation was investigated by the Public Complaints Commission, an oversight committee created by the provincial government to ensure that complaints against the police are properly investigated and assessed.

Police Chief Troy Hagen says the complainant’s wounds were relatively minor and the person was treated in hospital and released.

Hagen says Power has been placed on administrative leave; a move dictated by Saskatchewan’s Police Act.

Hagen says it is not a good day for the city’s police service.

“But I stand behind the fact that our service does not minimize or try to hide or sweep these things under the carpet,” he says. “They’re dealt with appropriately.”
