Friends, family rally to live out mother’s final birthday wish

CALGARY- She was set to celebrate her birthday just a few days before Christmas. Instead, Arline Savage’s young family is left mourning their mother’s sudden passing.

44-year-old Savage was killed in a collision during the evening commute home on December 10, at Barlow Trail and Peigan Trail S.E. Police say her vehicle was t-boned by a truck, after running a red light.

While the shock is still setting in for her two children, a movement is underway to make her final birthday wish come true.

Savage had told family and friends that she didn’t want any gifts this year. Instead, she wanted to go to the Calgary Drop-In and Rehab Centre, and hand out $10 Tim Hortons gift cards to the clients. So, she contacted the centre, but was discouraged to find out that they get up to 500 people a day-and wanted to make sure everyone got one.

She appealed to family and friends for help, in hopes of getting at least 100 gift cards together for a seniors group that plans to visit the centre on December 21-the day before what would have been her birthday.

Now that she is gone, friends are rallying together in hopes of making her last wish come true.

“Getting together almost 500 cards feels like a humongous challenge,” says Josh Herbert, who is dating Savage’s daughter. “But I believe with the donations she received, the cards we’ve been able to gather, and with a great hope that this message could be spread throughout Calgary…we’ll be able to make Arline’s wish come true.”

A trust fund is now being set up for those wishing to donate to the cause.
