Suspects in custody after vehicle with 2 kids, dog stolen from northeast Calgary

Police say suspects have been taken into custody after a vehicle was stolen from northeast Calgary on Sunday while two children and a dog sat inside.

The vehicle, a GMC Terrain, was unlocked and running when it was taken from the 1000 block of McKinnon Drive N.E. at around 5:20 pm.

The driver had briefly left the vehicle to go inside a home, at which time police said a man got into the driver’s seat and took off.

After driving just one block, police said the suspect “realized the vehicle was occupied” and pulled over to allow the children and the dog to get out.

The children, a three-year-old and 14-year-old, were uninjured.

Police said the driver of the stolen Terrain met up with a second stolen vehicle, a black Jeep Grand Cherokee, a few blocks away.

According to a news release, a concerned citizen followed the stolen vehicles as they drove away.

At one point, in the area of 19 Street and the off ramp to westbound Memorial Drive, it’s alleged the driver of the stolen Grand Cherokee stopped and exited the vehicle with an axe, slashing the tire on the concerned citizen’s vehicle.

The stolen Terrain was later recovered in the 3100 block of Rae Crescent S.E.

The stolen Grand was found in the 4200 block of 17 Avenue S.E.
