Extreme cold warnings for southern Alberta were issued by Environment Canada Tuesday evening.
Such warnings are issued when the extremely cold temperatures and winds create an “elevated risk to health such as frostbite and hypothermia.”
As of 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, the following areas were under warnings:
- Brooks – Strathmore – Vulcan
- Cardston – Fort Macleod – Magrath
- Crowsnest Pass – Pincher Creek – Waterton Lakes National Park
- Cypress Hills Provincial Park – Foremost
- Drumheller – Three Hills
- Hannah – Coronation – Oyen
- Lethbridge – Taber – Milk River
- Medicine Hat – Bow Island – Suffield
- Okotoks – High River – Claresholm
The record low temperature for Jan. 3 in Lethbridge is -42.8 C. That record was set in 1950, but the city has seen that exact temperature on five different days (over different years).
Extreme cold warnings for areas around Red Deer were issued – then dropped – earlier in the day.
“Clear skies and gusty winds this evening will create extreme wind chills,” Environment Canada said. “Conditions will moderate from the north overnight.”
