CALGARY- A series of open houses are being held this week, concerning a series of gas pipelines that ATCO wants to install around the city.
There are 120 kilometres of high pressure gas pipelines buried around Calgary, and many are under residential neighbourhoods. They’re an average of 50 to 60 years old, and ATCO is looking to shut them down and build new lines around the city outskirts.

The company has applied to the utilities commission but needs to hold open houses for feedback.
“We believe the option to build the new pipelines is the most cost effective because we know what that cost will be,” said Brendan Dolan, vice-president of ATCO pipelines. “We don’t know what it would cost to replace the existing system in its current location until the testing is completed, and understand the overall cost of that would take quite a few years.”

The cost of the new lines will be shared between residential, business and industrial customers, and appear on gas bills.
It works out to about $2 more per month for homeowners.
