Schools in many parts of Nova Scotia were closed Thursday as an intense weather system makes it’s way across the province.

Halifax Regional School Board spokesperson Doug Hadley said the board made the decision to cancel school because an intense period of snow is expected to hit the Halifax area between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
The concern was that roads in the city are already icy and the impact of heavy snow in such a brief period of time could cause unsafe road conditions.

Weather impacting flights
Some flights in and out of the Halifax Stanfield International Airport were delayed due to weather conditions.
Anyone who is planning to fly today is encouraged to contact their airline to check on the status of their flight before heading to the airport.

No ferry crossings to Newfoundland
Marine Atlantic ferry crossings from North Sydney, N.S., to Port aux Basques, N.L., have been cancelled for Thursday night and Friday.
Ferry service is being rescheduled for Saturday, December 17.
Special weather statement issued
Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for most of Nova Scotia, as temperatures are expected to become bone chilling cold.
Very cold air and strong winds overnight Thursday and Friday morning will cause temperatures to drop to -15 to -20 C.

When you factor in the windchill, Environment Canada says the temperature will feel more like -30 C and are warning people that there is a significant risk of frostbite.
