Major grow-op busted in northeast Calgary

CALGARY- A major grow-op has been shut down in the city’s northeast.

On Wednesday, investigators found 482 marijuana plants valued at over $600,000 in a home on 48 Street N.E. after executing a warrant at the property.

“It was immediately clear to us that this property posed a significant safety risk to the neighbouring houses. The insulation around the wires in the transformer box was damaged from excessive heat,” said acting S/Sgt. Paul Wozney. “This could have easily resulted in a fire if we hadn’t gotten to this property when we did.”

Officers found the electrical and water services had been bypassed and the furnace and hot water tank were altered to supply carbon dioxide to the plants.

The home has since been deemed unfit for human habitation.
