City discontinues property tax prepayment discount

SASKATOON – The city of Saskatoon’s property tax prepayment discount has been discontinued.

The change comes after the provincial government announced in March that municipalities would no longer have the authority to apply a prepayment discount to education property taxes.

In June, city council approved a recommendation from administration to discontinue the prepayment discounts for property taxes starting in January 2013.

The city had offered a discount for payments made by Jan. 31 of the following year.

A change is also being made to the tax installment payment plan service (TIPPS).

Monthly amounts will be adjusted in February and July each year.

Previously, those adjustments were made in January and June.

The December TIPPS withdrawal will be for the exact amount of taxes outstanding while the January payment will be the same as the November TIPPS amount.

TIPPS allows property owners to make 12 monthly payments for property taxes on the first banking day of each month.
