Thousands of Quebec students protest in downtown Montreal

MONTREAL – Quebec students have been organizing large-scale marches on the 22 of each month since March, and this month is no different.

As part of a global movement against tuition fees, thousands of Quebec students were gathered at Square Victoria in downtown Montreal on Thursday afternoon.

Montreal police have already declared the march illegal, as no route for the protest was provided, as required by law.

Several CEGEPs and university faculties at universities have voted to strike as part of an international day of action on education.

On Thursday morning, access to doors at the Universite du Quebec a Montreal (UQAM) in downtown Montreal was blocked by protesters and students hung a banner with the logo of the student group CLASSE on the Decarie overpass in NDG.

The protest was scheduled to kick off at Victoria Square at 2 p.m. and the march is expected to pass through the downtown core.

The student rally has been organized by CLASSE, a student organization that represents Quebec CEGEP and university students united in demanding free university tuition.

The student group FECQ, which represents CEGEP students, will not be participating in Thursday’s protest, although students at CEGEP du Vieux Montreal and Vanier College voted to go on strike this week in order to take part.

FEUQ leader Martine Desjardins has said that members of the FEUQ, an organization that represents university students, are hoping that the upcoming education summit in February will cement Parti Quebecois promises to freeze tuition.
