A 44-year-old Edmonton man has been charged after Strathcona County RCMP caught a vehicle travelling more than twice the posted speed limit over the weekend.

At around 11 a.m. Sunday, RCMP clocked a silver Toyota Sienna going 129 km/h in a 60 km/h zone. Police said the van was heading north on 17 Street just south of Baseline Road in Sherwood Park.

The man, whose name has not be released, was given a mandatory court appearance along with his speeding ticket.

RCMP said speeding is one of the leading causes of collisions and this should serve as a reminder to drivers to slow down.

“The faster a vehicle driver speeds, the less time you have to react – not to mention the increase in forces on the human body in a collision at high speeds,” RCMP said in a media release Wednesday. “Personal injuries are worse in vehicle collisions at high speeds.”

Demerits for speeding range from two points for those speeding less than 15 km/h over the posted limit, to six points for those driving more than 50 km/h over the posted speed limit.
