Weather conditions are being cited as a likely factor as Toronto police have responded to numerous reports of pedestrians being struck by vehicles since the evening rush hour began Tuesday.
Between just before 5:30 and 10:30 p.m., there were at least 21 collision calls to Toronto police. Two people were hit after a collision near Dalhousie Street and Queen Street East and one person remains in serious, but non-life-threatening condition. A man who was struck by a vehicle near Dufferin Street and King Street West is in serious condition.
Toronto police Const. Craig Brister told Global News officers have seen a “sharp increase” in collisions throughout the evening.
“We’re at that time of year where it’s getting darker earlier. It’s colder out. It’s a lot easier for the roads to become slippery and tonight we’ve sort of had a perfect storm of circumstances come together,” he said.

Earlier in the day, an 87-year-old woman died after she was struck by a SUV near Bathurst Street and Sheppard Avenue West.
Meanwhile, Brister called on drivers and pedestrians to pay attention while travelling throughout the city.
“Everyone needs to be aware of their surroundings and really be cognizant of the road conditions that if it is slippery, it does take cars longer to stop,” he said.
