University of Saskatchewan projecting $44-million deficit by 2016

SASKATOON – The University of Saskatchewan is projecting a $44-million budget deficit by 2016. 

The announcement was made Tuesday at a town hall meeting. 

To deal with the shortfall, the vice-presidents of academic and finance said cuts will likely be made to areas such as the university’s leases, land development and workforce over the next four years.

Two different strategies were also discussed to close the gap between revenue and expenses. 

One would leave cost slashing up to individual departments and the other would assess all programs offered and downsize to focus strength on more essential areas. 

They also said there would be no hiring freezes, no early retirement packages and no across-the-board cuts.
