1 dead in Welland after alleged drunk driving crash overnight

WELLAND, Ont. – Police in Niagara Region say one man is dead after an alleged drunk driving collision between an SUV and a car early Saturday morning.

They say the SUV was travelling west and the car was travelling east at about 1 a.m. Saturday, when the two vehicles collided head-on in Welland, Ont.

Police say the driver in the car, a 34-year-old Fort Erie woman, was taken to hospital with serious injuries, and her 39-year-old male passenger, also of Fort Erie, was pronounced dead at the scene.

They say the 51-year-old driver in the SUV was arrested at the scene and charged with impaired driving causing death and impaired driving causing bodily harm.

Police are asking any witnesses to come forward.
