Name sought for Vancouver’s newest school

The Vancouver board of education is holding a contest to name its newest school.

The school, still under construction, is located near the University of B.C. on the current site of University Hill secondary. The students who are expected to attend the school when it opens in fall 2014 are currently being taught in portables alongside Queen Elizabeth elementary school.

It’s now known simply as Acadia Road school but the board wants to give it a permanent name soon and is seeking help from the community by way of a contest that opened Monday and closes Jan. 18 at 4 p.m.

“This is a community school so it is fitting that we are seeking suggestions for a new name from the community,” board chairwoman Patti Bacchus said in a release.

Contest rules state that proposed names should honour historical and cultural heritage, recognize an outstanding individual now deceased or be significant to the geography of the area. Avoid names already in use.

The school will be able to accommodate 850 students and has many distinctive features, including a three-dimensional reproduction of a giant tree situated in the a commons area. Each of its colourful leaves will be painted by a student in the school.
