Woman killed in crash with semi trailer on Deerfoot Trail

Police believe weather may have played a role in a crash on northbound Deerfoot Trail on Wednesday that killed one woman.

It happened between Country Hills Boulevard N.E. and Stoney Trail N.E. just before 10 p.m.

Police said the driver of a BMW 325CI lost control of her vehicle and was t-boned by a Kenworth semi trailer following behind her.

“The BMW came to rest approximately 88 metres north of the area of impact,” a Thursday news release said. “The Kenworth jackknifed off the road to the left and came to rest approximately 80 metres away.”

The driver of the BMW, a 44-year-old woman, was taken to hospital where she later died. Police haven’t released the victim’s identity.

The driver of the tractor trailer wasn’t injured.

Neither speed, alcohol or drugs were factors in the collision, according to police.

The collision caused northbound lanes of Deerfoot Trail to be shut down for about five hours.

Police suggested snowfall and freezing rain could be to blame for a large number of crashes on city streets.

According to Calgary police, 59 collisions were reported between 9 p.m. on Wednesday and 9 a.m. on Thursday, including nine with injuries.
