UPDATE: Accused in Ashlee Hyatt trial guilty of manslaughter

The jury has found a West Kelowna teen guilty of the manslaughter of another teen.
In June 2010, Ashlee Hyatt, 16, died from a stab wound to her neck sustained during a Peachland house party.
Her killer was also 16 years old at the time.
On Sunday afternoon, the six man, six woman jury found the teen not guilty of second degree murder but guilty of the reduced charge of manslaughter. They also found the teen not guilty of assault charges. The jury had been sequestered since Friday afternoon.
Security was tight at the courthouse and everyone trying to get into the courtroom was body scanned. There were about 40 family members and friends from both sides in the courtroom.
The accused broke down in tears when the verdict was read.
Friends and family of Ashlee Hyatt gasped and cried as they heard the jury’s decision.
A date will be fixed for sentencing on December 3.
The Crown is applying to have the accused sentenced as an adult pending two reports: a psychiatric report and a pre-sentence report.
Despite the accused not being found guilty of murder, Charrie Hyatt, Ashlee’s mother, was ecstatic.
“Ashlee got justice. Now she [the accused] has to be accountable for her actions and that’s all we wanted. I just wanted her to be accountable for taking a life,” Charrie said.
Ashlee’s best friend was also happy with the verdict.
“I wish it was second degree [murder] but I’m just happy it’s something because Ashlee deserves something,” said Samantha Waller. “I wish it was more but at least it’s something that that girl has to pay for a little while.”
“I would just like [the accused] to go away long enough for her to realize what she’s taken from us.”
The accused is out on bail.
