Holiday shopping expected to be less this season

According
to a new Canadian study conducted by the Royal Bank of Canada, consumers in
Saskatchewan are expected to spend less this holiday season. 

“Consumers
are still in a gift-giving mood, however maybe a little more tempered,” says Don
Morris, regional vice-president of RBC.  

While
the study suggests shoppers in this province plan on trimming their budgets,
local retailers aren’t making that easy.  

Some
big-box stores have noticed the trend of Canadian shoppers heading south of the
border for black Friday. This year, they’re offering up those deals in Regina.

“This
is one of those days where if customers need to get their holiday shopping done,
it’s a very good time to do it because there’s going to be fantastic deals
throughout the store,” says Remiel Isaac-Daniel, general manager at Future Shop.
 

Future
Shop isn’t the only retailer hoping to combat cross-border shopping. For the
first time ever, Regina’s Cornwall Centre is also planning a blitz of sales next
Friday.  

“There
are a number of retailers that will be offering one-day specials and promotions
so that the consumers can take advantage of the great shopping season,” says
Krista BeBeau, marketing manager at the Cornwall Centre.  

Regardless
of where you shop, RBC says there are a few things any consumer should keep in
mind.  

“The
number one thing would be to understand your limits and to stay within your
budget,”
Morris
says. “And the second one would be, make sure you plan
ahead.”
