Foundation gets go-a-head for Gordie Howe Bowl upgrades

SASKATOON – City council approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) last night to raise the necessary funds for renovations at Gordie Howe Bowl.

The revised MOU with the ‘Friends of the Bowl’ included changes to stadium operations and clarifies the foundation’s fundraising guidelines.

“The city has reached out to key players to work together and innovatively to fundraise for this aging facility to help address an important community need,” said Cary Humphrey leisure services branch manager.

Foundation partners include the Saskatoon Amateur Softball Association (SASA), Saskatoon Hilltops Football Club Inc. and Saskatoon Secondary Schools Athletic Directorate (SSSAD).

The project is expected to take between two to four years to complete and will require an estimated $10 million in donations. An additional $600,000 is scheduled for council’s approval in the 2013 budget.

Upgrades include an artificial turf football field, lights, score clock, sound system, and a multi-purpose free-standing support building housing public washrooms, locker rooms, concession and storage.

“The planned upgrades will provide a direct benefit to healthy lifestyles for youth, revive a mature neighbourhood – and improve the quality of life for all citizens of Saskatoon,” said City Manager Murray Totland.

Gordon Howe Bowl officially opened in 1960.
