Snowfall blankets Winnipeg, leaving a slippery morning commute

WINNIPEG — Drivers heading to work Tuesday morning should give themselves extra time on the roads due to the treacherous weather.

The snow started falling in the early morning, covering city roads and highways.

This is Winnipeg’s first snowfall accumulation of the season.

There are reports of several crashes so far, and many highway outside city limits are either covered in snow or ice.

  • Highway 59 south from city limits to Île-des-Chênes is covered in snow.
  • Highway 75 from St. Adolphe to Winnipeg is ice covered.
  • Highway 1 east from city limits to Highway 2017 is partly covered in snow.
  • Highway 1 west from the city limits to Headingley is covered in snow.
  • Highway 9 from Winnipeg to Lockport is snow covered.
  • Highway 9 from city limits to Highway 101 is snow covered and has drifting snow.

There is still a chance for the 5-10 cm of snow by the end of Tuesday for areas east of Winnipeg. Winnipeg itself will likely see less than 5 cm with the majority of the snow falling in the morning. Meantime there is a risk of freezing rain and mixed precipitation west to Portage la Prairie.

Overnight across southern Manitoba there’s a risk of freezing drizzle but Tuesday morning commute will be by far the worst.
