Police charge Kyle Douglas Shipley with attempted murder after Halifax taxi shooting

HALIFAX – A 24-year-old man is facing two counts of attempted murder and several other charges in connection with shots fired at a taxi in Halifax’s north end earlier this month.

Police arrested Kyle Douglas Shipley, of Williamswood, at about 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 11.

He will be arraigned Tuesday in Halifax Provincial Court on 16 charges in relation to the shooting early Nov. 3, in the area of Robie and McCulley streets.

Neither the 48-year-old taxi driver nor the male passenger were injured. The passenger ran off before police arrived on the scene.

A small silver car, from which the shots were allegedly fired, fled the scene.

Halifax Regional Police Const. Pierre Bourdages would not confirm if Shipley had been arrested in a previous raid at a residence in Williamswood.

Investigators with the Halifax Regional Police and RCMP Integrated General Investigation Section made four arrests on Nov. 5, after conducting searches at three residences – two homes in Halifax and one at 2427 Old Sambro Road in Williamswood.

None of the four people arrested that day were charged in connection with the shooting, but three men were charged with drug and weapons offences.

The search at the Williamswood home led to police cordoning off a one-kilometre stretch of Old Sambro Road, after investigators discovered a suspicious device and called in the bomb squad to remove it.

Shipley was remanded to the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility, in Dartmouth, until his court appearance.

He faces the following charges.

CC 239 – Attempted murder (2 counts)
CC 267(a) – Assault with a weapon (2 counts)
CC 117.01(1) – Possession of a firearm contrary to prohibition order
CC 86(1) – Careless use of a firearm
CC 86(2) – Unsafe storage of a firearm
CC 87(1) – Pointing a firearm
CC 88(1) – Possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace
CC 92(1) – Possession of a firearm without license
CC 94 – Unauthorized possession of a restricted weapon in a motor vehicle
CC 85(1) (a) – Use of a firearm in the commission of an offence
CC 244 – Discharging a firearm with intent (2 counts)
CC 244.2(1) (a) – Discharging a firearm – reckless endangerment to the life of another person (2 counts)
