SASKATOON – Private liquor stores are coming to Saskatoon.
The Saskatchewan government announced today that two stores will open in Saskatoon and one in Regina.
The private stores will be able to carry a full line of wine, spirits and beer, offer home delivery and can operate from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
An increase in the province’s population is behind the move.

“The province’s population has grown by 80,000 people during the past five years which has meant more customers at our liquor stores,” said Donna Harpauer, the minister responsible for Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Control (SLGA).
“SLGA has been doing a good job managing the increased volumes but we know that there are neighbourhoods that are still underserved.”
The new stores will be chosen through request for proposals to be released later this month and conducted by a third party.
Proposals will then be evaluated for location, retail shopping environment and overall service.
The private store operators will also be required to participate in SLGA initiatives, such as Check 25, which requires an ID check of anyone who looks under the age of 25.
The last SLGA store to open in Saskatoon was the University Heights location in 2006.
