A significant number of Americans are taking to social media to voice feelings of frustration and exhaustion as the U.S. presidential election approaches its long-awaited conclusion.

With less than 24 hours to go before polls open, the hashtag #ElectionFinalThoughts began trending in North America, where both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton supporters came together to express their emotions heading into a historic election. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen evidence of the election taking a toll on the public. In October, the American Psychological Association released preliminary data from its annual “Stress in America” report, showing the level of anxiety specifically around the election.

Fifty-two per cent of respondents said the election “is a very or somewhat significant” source of stress in their lives. And it doesn’t matter which camp you follow — 59 per cent of Republicans and 55 per cent of Democrats also said the election is stressing them out.

In July, Gallup reported that 51 per cent of adults said they were “afraid of the election outcome.”
