The Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation in Saskatchewan has been fined $100,000 for not complying with an environmental protection order involving storage of oil and gas.
The First Nation pleaded guilty on Oct. 6 for failing to comply with the order to take measures to comply with rules for storage tank systems for petroleum products.

Environment Canada laid the charges under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act.
The government says rules are in place to reduce the risk of contaminating soil and groundwater due to spills and leaks of petroleum products from storage tank systems.
The $100,000 will go into the Environmental Damages Fund.

The government-administered fun says it “follows the polluter pays principle to help ensure that those who cause environmental damage or harm to wildlife take responsibility for their actions.
It says the funds go to priority projects to benefit the environment.
