A man running across Canada to raise awareness of missing and murdered indigenous women told people his story at a free event in Halifax on Sunday.
“Putting on the war paint definitely has given me some proud moments there, but at the same time I’m a runner. I’m just a messenger,” said Brad Firth, who also goes by the name Caribou Legs.
The 1 p.m. event was held in an auditorium in the Museum of Natural History.
Firth started the run in Vancouver in May.

He told the crowd about his troubles with the law when he was younger and how he coped after a female relative of his was violently killed.
“[The run] is healing me a lot. I think about her every day but, as this run goes, everybody else is healing as well. So my pain is their pain,” said Firth.
He regularly posts updates of his run on his Facebook page.
Sharon Kinsman set up the event, which was attended by about 40 people at its beginning.
“I think it’s an important message that we all have to share with not just indigenous people, but all cultures need to know why Brad is running,” she said.
Firth is scheduled to complete his run in St. John’s on November 18.
