Money is being invested in some unusual new projects on BC campuses.
The provincial government announced 3.4 million dollars in funding today that will go towards “cutting-edge” research at the University of British Columbia.
The money will go towards focusing on new projects that may not receieve typical funding. It is part of the BC Knowledge Development Fund.
Two Kelowna-area MLAs were at UBC Okanagan Friday to make the announcement.
”Our government takes pride in the strength of BC’s research universities and their focus on innovation,” said Kelowna- Lake Country MLA Norm Letnick.
There will be 22 projects funded by the 3.4 million dollars, seven of which will take place at UBC Okanagan.
Research projects include new cancer screening technologies, improved treatment of diseases that impair brain function, and examining natural gas processing. Funds will also be used to establish labs to help make better decisions during wildfires, and to integrate renewable energy sources with British Columbia’s power grid.

The investment comes just one day after the government announced money for industry-standard trades training equipment at Penticton’s Okanagan College.
