There were some tough new “police recruits” out walking the beat in Halifax on Friday afternoon.

Eden and Lyla Avni were dressed head to toe as SWAT officers . They had handcuffs, radios and even waved around batons.

But there was one thing that gave the pair away – the teddy bears the girls were carrying with their uniforms.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Eden, 4, and her younger sister Lyla, 2, got into the Halloween spirit a little early and headed down to the Halifax Regional Police headquarters on Gottingen Street.

Their mother says she called police this week to see if she could get some pins to go with their costumes, but Deputy Police Chief Bill Moore took things one step further and invited the children down to the station to have look around and sit in a real police car.
