WINNIPEG — Winnipeg city hall went to the birds Thursday as the appeals committee debated allowing a man keep dozens of pigeons.

A group of River Heights residents appealed Karim Lowen’s plan to build an aviary for more than 40 racing pigeons at his home on Mathers Avenue near Lanark Street.

The city had already approved Lowen’s plan to build the coop for the pigeons that race in competitions. His neighbours in River Heights wanted his permit revoked and took it to city hall where the appeal committee overturned the decision.

“Because of the noise… because of the health issues it could bring, because those are pigeons even if they are trained,” said Ariel Karabelnicoff, a River Heights resident during an interview with Global News on Monday.

Karabelnicoff gathered more than 100 signatures in opposition to the birds to take to the appeals committee Thursday morning.
