Opposition leader Rona Ambrose accused Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of not being honest with Canadians about the true role Canadian soldiers would be playing in Canada's anti-ISIS mission – Oct 26, 2016

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the government’s clampdown on information about Canada’s mission in Iraq is necessary to protect Canadian soldiers on the ground.

But interim Conservative leader Rona Ambrose says the government is trying to hide the fact the troops are engaged in combat with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.

The heated exchange in the House of Commons on Wednesday came after military officers revealed recently that Canadian soldiers are spending more time on the front lines and engaging in more firefights with ISIL.

Trudeau defended any accusations of secrecy, telling the House the government is protecting Canadian Forces members.

“We have changed somewhat the approach of the previous government,” he said. “We will not put our men and women in the Canadian Forces in harm’s way for communications purposes. We remain open and transparent about what this mission is … but we will not compromise their safety for a communications exercise here at home.”
