Liberal byelection candidate for the riding of Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner (Alta.), Stan Sakamoto, believes his experience in owning a business in southern Alberta will help him have a “strong voice at the table.”
Global News reporter Erik Mikkelsen asked Sakamoto a few questions we thought voters would like to know. Here’s a full transcript below:
Erik Mikkelsen: Tell us a little about yourself. What is your background and experience in politics?
Stan Sakamoto: I’ve lived in southern Alberta my whole life. I’ve raised seven children in southern Alberta and I’ve been running my small business in Medicine Hat for decades. This is my first entry into the political arena but I know firsthand the issues people in this riding face and I want to champion our riding in Ottawa.
EM: Why did you decide to run for this byelection?
SS: Southern Alberta is hurting. The economy is in a downturn, unemployment is up and our communities need help. Southern Alberta has been the forgotten corner for decades under the Conservatives and we can’t afford more of the same. I want to be a strong voice at the table so I can work with the Liberal government to address the needs of our riding.
EM: What do you believe is the biggest issue affecting constituents in your riding?
SS: Jobs. I can’t say it enough. Through my small business, I’ve employed literally thousands of people in this riding over the last few decades and I know what it takes to get people to work. I’m passionate about delivering that for the people in this riding.
EM: If elected, what can your constituents expect from you?
SS: If elected, my constituents can expect me to serve them with the kind of dedication and hard work that I’ve been serving them with through my business for over 40 years. I will always be accessible and I will ensure their MP is their voice to Ottawa, not Ottawa’s voice in Medicine Hat.
