UPAC confirms raids at several financial institutions

MONTREAL – A spokesperson for the Quebec anti-corruption squad confirmed early Wednesday afternoon that search warrants have been executed at “several” branches of financial institutions.

Anne-Frédérick Laurence would say only that “these are related to an ongoing investigation.”

She would not one media report that the target was at least two safety-deposit boxes apparently maintained by Laval Mayor Gilles Vaillancourt or people in his entourage.

Vaillancourt’s home and a condo unit and storage area associated with his family were both searched this month by investigators from the Unité provinciale anticorruption (UPAC).

The initial round of raids were conducted Oct. 4, when investigators simultaneously descended on Laval’s city hall and its computer-operations centre.

The second raid took place Oct. 5.

The latest raids appeared to have been conducted Wednesday morning – while the Laval municipal executive committee long dominated by Vaillancourt was conducting a regular weekly meeting.

Johanne Bournival, a spokesperson for Vaillancourt as well as the municipal executive committee, could not immediately be reached to confirm or deny the indications that Vaillancourt or other high-level members of the Laval civic administration were the target.
