The area around the Mon Village restaurant at the corner of Highway 40 and Côte St-Charles in Saint-Lazare has been rural for years. The 41-year-old restaurant is a converted farmhouse that is surrounded by acres of grass and woods. A recent mixed-use development could change that.
According to Bill Tallman, who owns Mon Village, the proposal is still in the initial stages. The development could include a supermarket, a pharmacy and as many as 90 condo units. Tallman also owns the land Mon Village is on, and is one of three landowners in the area under consideration.
Tallman is in favour of the development — it would goose revenue at his own business, and he says town officials seem willing to ensure that the architecture included is in keeping with the surroundings.
One resident, Otto Vass, told Global News he too favoured the development. “Currently some people have to drive 25 miles to the nearest grocery,” he said. “For a town this affluent, a major supermarket would be a good thing.”
The development is slated for public consultation sometime in the future. Mayor Robert Grimaudo wasn’t immediately available for comment.
