The stories of Vernon seniors are taking centre stage at a North Okanagan art exhibit this month.

Seven artists were paired up with seven local seniors; their assignment to create works of art inspired by the seniors themselves.

The result is a deeply personal show that provides a window in the experiences of some of the region’s oldest residents.

“Oftentimes seniors, once they’ve moved into a home, that’s it. They become very isolated from the community and things going on [in it],” said Keyanna Burgher with the Vernon Community Art Centre. “I thought it would be a great way to inspire artists with outside inspirations and also get the seniors involved in the community more.”

“Seniors have this whole lifetime of stories that so often aren’t told and I wanted to tell their stories in an interesting way.”

Artist Nancy Vince was paired up with 91-year-old Lucy Brett, the great niece of Vernon’s first mayor.

The result was this series of four images, including one piece celebrating Lucy’s crafty crocheting and another her holidays at Birch Bay.

“I hope we carry it through year-to-year because I think the seniors deserve to be heard. They have some amazing stories,” said Vince.

The Stories of the Past exhibit will be on display at the Vernon Community Arts Centre until October 26.
