Pilot dead after plane crash in Blackfalds, Alberta

A pilot is dead after a plane crash in the central Alberta town of Blackfalds Thursday afternoon.

The Transportation Board of Canada (TSB) said the male pilot was the only one on board when the plane went down near 37 Cottonwood Drive at about 2:50 p.m.

Emergency crews said the plane didn’t hit any buildings or injure anyone on the ground when it landed in an “open area” close to area homes.

The type of aircraft was a Steen Skybolt, an aerobatic biplane.

RCMP said the biplane left Lacombe Airport and experienced “what witnesses believed to be engine trouble.” The name of the deceased will not be released by police.

Two TSB investigators were en route to the scene as of 3:30 p.m. Thursday.
