KELOWNA – RCMP had to take extraordinary precautions when dealing with an apparent drug overdose death.

Police were called Saturday afternoon to an apartment building on Academy Way adjacent to the UBCO campus where a dead man was found inside a third-floor unit.

Police also found items of special concern.

“Investigators located various items on scene which they believed posed a potential health and safety risks to the various agencies involved,” said RCMP spokesperson Cst. Jesse O’Donaghey in a news release. “The decision was made to back out of the residence and call out the RCMP’s Federal Clandestine Laboratory Enforcement and Response Team (CLEAR) to the scene to assist.”

Team members arrived Sunday and suited up in full haz-mat gear to enter and decontaminate the unit, allowing investigators to safely process the scene.

As the man’s death is not considered a criminal matter, police have handed off the investigation to the Coroners Service.
