Police investigate bomb scare at southeast Calgary strip mall

Police were called to the scene of a possible bomb scare at Shawnessy strip mall at around 5:30 a.m. Sunday morning.

Officers said a man in a vehicle was pulled over in front of a business on Shawville Boulevard just off of Macleod Trail when the driver told police he had a replica pipe bomb in his trunk.

Officers cordoned off the vehicle and an area of the southeast mall while a pedestrian bridge leading into the area was also shut down.

Police said officers took the man into custody in connection with unrelated offences but said charges are pending in connection with the explosive device incident.

They said a detonation of the explosive device was successfully carried out.

Officers have not confirmed the type of device it was.

The situation was resolved after several hours.
